Pedometers and the Nike Plus

by Techsplosive on January 31, 2009

Pedometers have recently started to entertain a cult following.  Health clubs and insurance companies are giving them away as an incentive to get people to make healthier choices.  Needless to say, it is working.

Pedometers are small electronic devices that can track the number of steps the user takes.  More complex pedometers will show the number of miles walked, the number of calories burned by walking, and different statistics about walking patterns.  The Nike Plus has completely revolutionized the small world of pedometers.  The Nike Plus essentially allows the users shoes to communicate with their iPod. A small device is placed in the shoe of the walker or runner, and the runner can then hear distance and other statistics through their iPod headphones on command.  When the run, walk, or work day is over the runner can then sync their Nike Plus and iPod to the computer to gain a more in depth look at their walking or running statistics.

Pedometers are one of the easiest and most practical pieces of technology that can be integrated into an everyday lifestyle.  Most pedometers are about the size of a thin ice cube and can easily (and almost invisibly) be clipped onto the waist, pocket, or shoe of the user.  The Nike Plus is invisible to all because it is actually located inside of the shoe of the user.  Pedometers are a super practical way to track exercise.  When the user sees the number of steps taken in one day, and notices that the number goes up the next day – that is a huge motivator to take even more steps in the future.  Pedometers are a perfect match for the people who made a New Years Revolution to shed a few pounds and live a more healthy lifestyle.

For features, size, comprehensive statistical tracking the pedometer receives a rating of 10/10.  For seamless lifestyle integration and the motivation factor pedometer’s once again receives a 10/10 giving the pedometer and Nike Plus a Techsplosive score of:

Not really had much experience with the Nike Plus. DO you think it is more accurate than the pedometer apps that you can download from the app store?
