Personal Digital Recorders

by Techsplosive on February 13, 2009

The main thing that separates current handleheld personal digital recorders from the handheld recorders of yesteryear, is the absence of cassette tapes.  Handheld recorders have also significantly progressed design-wise as well.  The large, fat, and clunky old recorders have become smaller, sleeker, thinner.  As a matter of fact, digital recorders have gone James Bond and now even come in pens and watches.

Personal digital recorders might be the single most self explanatory piece of technology.  When the user wants to record audio, they simply press the record button and then press stop at the appropriate time.  Digital recorders can usually play the audio back as long as the device contains a built in speaker.  Newer recorders are capable of holding up to 80 hours of audio footage.  The audio is stored on an SD card and can be transferred to a computer via the SD card or by using a USB cable.

Digital recorders may seem like a rather obscure piece of technology to highlight and review.  However, digital recorders are not just for transcriptionists.  Recorders are a valuable tool capable of helping the user to remember thoughts and ideas.  Many people think a lot while driving and traveling.  Many good ideas have come during this time, and just as many have been lost because the driver was unable to write down or type up the idea while driving.  Digital recorders have solved that problem.  Digital recorders are also practical for the salesperson, presenter, and writer.  Salespeople and other giving presentations can record their presentation, play it back, and improve their speech and content accordingly.  Likewise, writers can read their work out loud and play it back to insure that it is cohesive and understandable.

Digital recorders receive a 10/10 for design, size, and storage space.  For portability, practicality, idea memory, and editing help, digital recorders recieve a lifestyle integration score of 10/10.  Total Techsplosive score:

I’ve been wanting to get a digital recorder for some time now to help me record my thoughts… but I just end up using the one in my phone.

At times, using the recorder on the phone does “get the job done”. I have used that one before, but the recording space was too limited – I must have been to talkative. Needless to say, I ended up buying a recorder…
