Tweet to Beat – Twitter Turns Charitable Again

by Techsplosive on March 10, 2009

Seth Godin’s startup Squidoo.com is not just another revenue sharing content website.  They allow their writers to donate all or a percentage of their lens earnings to charity.  Squidoo has also turned out a few charitable campaigns on quite a large scale, one via Twitter.   The basic concept let users choose a charity from a list and tweet a link with a special hashtag.  Squidoo donated $2 for each tweet.  The concept worked beautifully, and $80,000 was given away via voting on Twitter.

Yesterday, Tim Ferriss decided to take to turn Twitter charitable again.  Tim’s Tweet to Beat campaign aims to benifit public school students in the United States by bribing people to follow him on twitter for $3 each. For every new follower Tim gets, he will personally donate $1 to  DonorsChoose.org and another private donor will match Tim’s $1 with two.  The current cap on Tim’s project is 50,000 new followers – so a possible total of $150,0o0 could be raised for charity – possibly making this the largest Twitter fundraiser so far.

Running simultaneously with the campaign is a contest to raise awareness and publicize the campaign.  People are encouraged to share with their followers on twitter and other social networks.  Two lucky people will come away from the campaign having won either a round trip ticket to anywhere in the world or a new 15″ Apple MacBook and accessories.

For more information on how you can get involved in raising money for U.S. public school students and possibly win a few cool prizes, see Tim Ferriss’ full Tweet to Beat post on the FourHourBlog.  If you would like to help publicize the Tweet to Beat campaign simply Tweet:
