Accessory Week: TV Accessories

by Techsplosive on April 7, 2009

During Accessory Week, I will be highlighting and rating different accessories for tech products and gadgets that we use evey day. If I miss a cool accessory that you think should have been featured, feel free to share via comment.

Hand-held gadgets and other portable tech devices are not the only pieces of technology that are open for accessorizing.  Electronics for the home are very accessorizable, however doing so generally results in a much higher cost – yet the advantages of accessorizing home electronics are great, as you will see from the great TV accessories below.

SlingBox. SlingBox is the latest and greatest in TV accessory technology.  The SlingBox lets users broadcast their cable or satellite television service from home over the internet so that they can watch it remotely on any computer or laptop from anywhere in the world.  This TV accessory lets you check in on your favorite shows or sporting events with your laptop or computer at work, or any other place away from your home TV.  For those of you absorbed in your mobile phone – the SlingBox will also broadcast to that, and is implementing iPhone broadcasting in the near future.

“Surround Sound”. Saying “surround sound” seems a bit 90’s, but who didn’t love the 90’s anyway?  Buying a killer sound and speaker system in conjunction with a new television can creat the ultimate home theater experience.  It is perfectly fine to compromise a few inches of screen space to have an experience that goes much deeper and beyond the sense of sight.  The perfect speaker system adds a sense of depth and perception to whatever is being watched, making it a “must-have” accessory for your TV.

Furniture. I guess I could have kept things rolling in the 90’s by saying “Entertainment Center”, but the truth is that entertainment centers are out.  Furniture is in.  More people than ever are seeking different ways to allow their technology to blend in with their home.  Entertainment centers only placed more of a focus on television unit, new furniture however has come up with clever and innovative ways to allow the technology to blend in with the rest of the environment, creating a more relaxed atmosphere.

Gaming. With the advent of the Nintendo Wii, video game consols are no longer for teens – and those older than teens who remain avid gamers.  The interactivity of the Wii has made it popular among families as a family activity.  Additionally, it provides some with new ways to exercise and releive stress via the Wii Fit device.  The Wii, and other consols are great TV accessories for those looking to have fun with others, or simply kill time and relax.

DVD Player. Unless you prefer to watch movies only when they are aired on TV, you might want to invest in the most common TV accessory of all – the DVD player.  For those who are busy, but like to keep up with a select few TV shows, other TV accessories like Tivo and other Digital Video Recording systems are available.

For those of you stuck in the 90’s, I might have a VHS player laying around if you have $5…

Some other interesting stuff...
