Ever since BumpTop was revealed at the TED conference, the tech-lovin’ subculture has been waiting on its full release. BumpTop has been released to the general population, with unlimited downloads for the free version, and only 200 premium editions available.
BumpTop delivered as promised. All features mentioned in the TED demo are available to the end user. As long as your computer is running an adequate amount of RAM, you shouldn’t notice any lag in performance. Learning to use BumpTop is completely simple as well. If you prefer not to just fool around until you learn, BumpTop inludes a step by step tutorial to show you the ropes and get you organizing your desktop exactly the way you want it.
Before you rush to download and pimp out your desktop in 3D, I just want to throw a few things that you might want to think about. There are two types of products – practical products, and novelty products. BumpTop is definitely a novelty product. While it does have incredible functionality and great features, they are mainly for the purpose of aesthetics and customization. BumpTop is like the Burger King for desktops – you can have it exactly your way. As far as practicality goes, BumpTop is not an app I would use while I bum around my computer at home. However, BumpTop is definitely a piece of sweetness that I would use while I compute out in coffee shops and other public areas. It’s innovative design and features are sure to turn a few heads and grab some attention.
If you want your own copy of BumpTop to tool around with, or even if you just want to read a little bit further into it you can check it all out at the BumpTop website.
