Kodak ESP Printers – A Real Revolution?

by Techsplosive on April 25, 2009

The new Kodak ESP Printer series was debuted on the Celebrity Apprentice 2008 show, and has now ramped up their efforts to get the word out about their new and revolutionary “money saving” line of printers.

Buying printer ink is one of my least favorite experiences.  Who wants to go out and spend $30 on just a couple ounces of colored water?  If you think you were getting ripped off paying $4.50/gallon for gas last summer, take a look at how much printer cartridges cost – talk about price gouging!  Kodak’s new ESP Printer line is an attempt to turn things around.  Kodak claims a 50% savings over previous printing costs when compared to similar printers, as they should.  Kodak ESP printer replacement cartridges are $9.99 of Black and $14.99 for color – compared to Lexmark’s printer cartridges which range from $15 – $3o a pop. However, it doesn’t all end with the printer cartridges…

Lexmark, and other printer manufacturing companies, sell their printers at a loss (below actual product value) and even give them away free with computer purchases knowing that they will make their money back on the recurring ink cartridge sales.  Kodak on the other hand chargesfrom about $120+ for their printers and less for the cartridges.  For the short term, there really is no huge difference in costs between one printer or the other.  If you print things frequently and are looking out for the long term, then you will eventually see a good savings on your printing expenses.

Some other interesting stuff...

I’m liking Kodak’s new model and hope that more manufacturers follow suit. In the long run, it seems like it will be much cheaper for people who actively print.
