Thanks to the brilliant exclusive partnership struck up with Apple’s iPhone AT&T has gained some sort of expert status in the arena of smartphones, data plans, and wireless mobility. Whether it was calculated or not, the iPhone effect is in full force at the Dallas based Data/Com company as they announced a program to sell subsidized netbooks with 3G mobile internet access.
AT&T is looking at the future of mobility with wide eyes and open minds. AT&T peeked into the crystal ball and saw that the future is mobile – not just with phones. Any smart company wishing to stay in business must anticipate the future of the field and move into it. AT&T understands the limitations of handsets and smartphones (yes, the iPhone does have limitations…albeit not many) and progressed from a mobile phone company to a mobile “phocused” company. The already inexpensive 8″ to 10.5″ inch netbooks from Acer, Dell, and Lenovo will become even less expensive when purchased with a 2-year data plan. NetBooks on the 3G network marks a step in a new direction for mobile networks and computer users. Rather than having to rely on spotty wi-fi hotspots the personal, small business, or corporate user can perform business and correspondence on the go with a realiable mobile network. The other two major mobile networks have yet to respond to A&T’s innovation, but I imagine they won’t be too far behind.
Pricing and availability has not yet been announced.
