TechSplode Your Summer: How to Get Away and Stay Informed

by Techsplosive on June 29, 2009

TechSplode Your Summer! is a series of posts about how to maximize your summer activities through the usage of technology.

There are few things more refreshing than leaving the old day-jog and taking a much needed vacation.  However, it seems that work always finds a way to invade vacation and really hinder

Google Voice. Google’s Grand Central program, now called Google Voice, provides an excellent way for telephone users to accomplish more by doing less.  Google Voice provides all members with one telephone number.  Calls can be forwarded to land lines or mobile phones based on your schedule or personal preferences.  Beyond that Google Voice enables contains a voicemail feature which will actually transcribe voicemail messages.  Along with these already impressive features, Google Voice will also provide call blocking, conference calling, and international calling features all for the price of free. Next time you are on vacation, just pass out your Google Voice number and collect your voicemails online.  Let the less important ones go, and return any phone calls requiring attention.  Don’t let a constantly ringing cell phone ruin your summer vacation fun.

Email Autoresponse. Most email systems have some sort of built in vacation mode.  The vacation mode allows you to write a message that you are unavailable and will resume correspondence on x date.  By setting up the autoresponse message you automatically filter out all business correspondence that can wait until after vacation.  You will still be able to browse your inbox and respond to any urgent emails that may require immediate action or attention.

GoToMyPC. If you use a separate computer for the office than you do at home, as most people do, you can use a program like GoToMyPC to access all of the files on your work computer remotely.  While some may argue that this will only contribute to spending time on work during vacation, it will also allow you to stay up on different collaborative tasks happening throughout the rest of the office as well as give you access to any internal memos and notices that you may otherwise miss by being on vacation.  Programs like GoToMyPC could encourage you to spend time working on vacation, in an effort to make sure that you make the most of your time off of work be sure to use remote PC access programs only as much as is aboslutely necessary.

Some other interesting stuff...
