It seems like this week, and last, have been big on the search engines. For the sake of continuity, what do you say we keep the search engine ball rolling with Spezify.com?
Spezify is the product of two Swedish startupists Felix af Ekenstam and Per Persson. These two nordic masterminds have extensive experience in developting digital products and decided to venture into the realm of compilation with their Spezify project. Spezify is a relatively new project. It opened for private beta in April of 2009 and made its official launch for public use on June 15.
Spezify is a “search engine” which displays its results by scraping content by any and all websites relevant to the query. Essentially, Spezify launches a bunch of “mini-searches” through various other search engines, social media websites, and many other smaller websites to produce results in a visual format much like one would see things on their desk. The general concept behind Spezify is not intrinsically new. Other websites have done much the same thing but with a different purpose (i.e. creating visual timelines for specific search terms). While Spezify is not a new concept, it certainly has differentiated itself well enough to earn it’s own unique status and place within the internet community.
While other websites utilize APIs from only the most popular social media websites and search engines, Spezify makes it their goal to utilize as many free APIs as possible. Utilizing this amount of APIs makes the end user’s experience more complete and thorough. I would think that a service like Spezify would lend itself best to visually based queries (those resulting in high amounts of pictures and video footage – i.e. celebs, travel, nature, etc.)
While Spezify is a pretty cool service the first few times it is used, I don’t see web-o-sapiens flocking to use at as their default search option in the long term. Regardless, it will be fun to watch Spezify and see where they head in the future.
