Technology for the Crafter

by Techsplosive on April 18, 2009

Before you think crafting is only comprised of grandmothers getting together for quilt knitting and cross-stitch parties think again. Crafting has been a hobby of many people for many years, and very recently the crafting industry was valued at just over $30Billion. Some of the success of crafting has come thanks to a few pieces of technology that allow crafters to publicize their work, share ideas, sell their crafts, and network with each other.

Etsy. Etsy is an makes ecommerce websites available to crafters free of charge in exchange for a very minuscule royalty from all products sold.  Basically Etsy acts as a large online store and host allowing crafters and artists to list their work with pictures and a description, and sell it to any interested party. Change for Techsplosive.com

by Techsplosive on April 11, 2009

During every endeavour, there comes a point for reckoning.  I reached this point of reckoning this week, and have decided to implement a few changes here at Techsplosive.  I knew upon entering the technology and social media niche that it would not be easy.  Knowing that a majority of the top 15 blogs on the internet are tech ones was fine with me, it gave me somthing to strive for.  However, breaking into a niche that was heavily dominated and that has the authority to command the breaking news, releases, and insights from companies and other prominent people is quite difficult.  I often am forced to react the the news that is broken, rather than build authority be reporting it.

So, I decided I had to come up with something a bit more new, unique and original.  Something that the other tech and social media blogs do not do.  I have decided, after a small test run with something called “Accessory Week” to now run on themed weeks, or months.  I will also be testing a different format within the next few months, and going with daily static themes (e.g. – “Social Media Sunday”, “Start-up Saturday”, “Mobile Monday”, etc…)  At the end of the test periods, I will compare the metrics – and decide from there.  Luckily for you, all you need to do is sit back, read, and enjoy while I work hard to put something worth reading in front of you.

Geeking Out as Usual,

-Ethan

Hand-held gadgets and other portable tech devices are not the only pieces of technology that are open for accessorizing.  Electronics for the home are very accessorizable, however doing so generally results in a much higher cost – yet the advantages of accessorizing home electronics are great, as you will see from the great TV accessories below.

SlingBox. SlingBox is the latest and greatest in TV accessory technology.  The SlingBox lets users broadcast their cable or satellite television service from home over the internet so that they can watch it remotely on any computer or laptop from anywhere in the world.  This TV accessory lets you check in on your favorite shows or sporting events with your laptop or computer at work, or any other place away from your home TV.  For those of you absorbed in your mobile phone – the SlingBox will also broadcast to that, and is implementing iPhone broadcasting in the near future. by Techsplosive on April 6, 2009

During Accessory Week, I will be highlighting and rating different accessories for tech products and gadgets that we use evey day. If I miss a cool accessory that you think should have been featured, feel free to share via comment.

Accessorizing has hit almost every sector of technology and gadgetry.  Today, we will look at some of the most popular and most useful laptop accessories.

Carrying Case. Probably the most commonly owned laptop accessory is the carrying case.  Chances are it is even more popular amongst women than men.  For most males, laptop toting abilites have been integrated into messenger bags and brief cases.  The same goes for women who tote the same bags.  For the women who choose to use a smaller handbag instead of a larger one or messenger style bag, a variety of options are available from simple zippered cloth coverings to exquisite designer leather bags.

The creation of the iPod spawned a whole new side industry for protective products. The functionality of the protective accessories was mixed with novelty and style to form an all around desirable product to go along with the original piece. With the advent of the iPhone, it was understood that protective yet stylish accessories would come along to match it. Check ‘em out.

iPhone RainCoats. These silicon iPhone covers are simple in both form and color. Their thin rubber layer acts as a simple barrier between the iPhone and the world. While it will protect against scratches, it has less of a resistance to protection against drops, and other things that may cause dents or crush the device. However, for the low price of $0.01 from Amazon.com these iPhone rubbers make them much less expensive than real ones, and a no-brainer to buy if you are looking for simple protection.
